Even the slightest dampness or a leakage is as bad as being affected by termites – it not only destroys the beauty of your house but affects its durability.

What happens when water strikes?

The concrete used in building construction is porous in nature and in the absence of waterproofing, any moisture/water tends to seep in through the concrete’s capillary pores, resulting in carbonation and corrosion of reinforcement. This impairs the strength of concrete and results into its deterioration much before its normal life span. With effective waterproofing construction chemicals readily available today, such accidents can be avoided.

Problem: Rising Dampness on walls

Increasing dampness on walls is because of capillary action, owing to lack of DPC or DPC failure.

Solution in Existing Homes

Remove the existing plaster from damp surfaces, rack off all brick joints to remove loose mortar, clean & wash the area; refill the brick joints with Polymer modified cementitious (PMC) mortar (Tapecrete P-151: Cement: Silica Sand/ Fine sand = 1: 2: 4-6 by weight); apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry (Tapecrete P-151: Cement = 1: 2 by weight)& re-plaster the wall with cement-sand mortar admixed with CICO Super.

Solution in New Homes

Go for damp proof course in foundation. Add CICO No. 1 in concrete before casting concrete foundation layer on soil. Lay brick walls upto ground level with cement-sand mortar admixed with CICO No. 1. Then lay a DPC layer of 25 mm thick concrete admixed with CICO NO 1,apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry (Tapecrete P-151: Cement = 1: 2 by weight) on it and then construct the brickwork in superstructure .

Problem: Leakage in basement

This is common in many existing homes.

Solution in Existing Homes

Injection grouting process is the most convenient way to seal these leakages. Cement slurry admixed with CICO NSPGC is injected through fixed nozzles in areas around the leakage and all along the construction joints to seal all the pores & voids inside the concrete to make it waterproof.

Solution in New Homes

Waterproofing of basement should start from the foundation concrete layer itself. Apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry on it followed by 12mm protective plaster admixed with CICO Super on the sub base PCC surface.Then during casting of RCC raft & retaining walls, admix CICO No. 1 in concrete. Apply two coats of Tapecrete P 151 slurry on external side of retaining walls followed by 12mm protective plaster admixed with CICO Super. From internal side, do injection grouting all along the construction joints. Please note that it is always better for basement walls to be made with concrete & not bricks.

Problem: Leakage or dampness in Toilets

Leakage in ceiling or upper area in toilets is due to non-waterproofing of toilet on floor level just above it.

Solution in Existing Homes

For permanent solution, do the waterproofing of above toilet. Remove the existing tiles and expose the concrete surface. Clean the surface and do plumbing check to ensure all the pipes & fittings are intact. Repair all surface cracks with PMC mortar by widening them in V shape. Make corner fillets also with PMC mortar. Seal all pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply one coat of Tapecrete slurry& one coat of Tapecrete Brushtopping (Tapecrete P-151: Cement: Silica Sand = 1: 2: 2 by weight) on horizontal surface & also vertical walls atleast upto 1 foot. Provide 15mm protective plaster admixed with CICO Super followed by tile fixing.

Solution in New Homes

In fresh constructions, just clean the concrete surface of toilets & make corner fillets with PMC mortar. Seal all pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply one coat of Tapecrete slurry& one coat of Tapecrete Brushtopping (Tapecrete P-151: Cement: Silica Sand = 1: 2: 2 by weight) on horizontal surface & also vertical walls atleast upto 1 foot. Provide 15mm protective plaster admixed with CICO Super followed by tile fixing.

The same procedure above procedure is also to be followed for balconies & kitchens.

Problem: Dampness in terrace

Dampness in terraces (due to ageing) often reflects in ceiling & corners of rooms below terrace.

Solution for Existing Homes

For dampness in old terraces, remove the existing treatment on terrace and expose the main roof slab. Clean the surface and repair all surface cracks with PMC mortar by widening them in V shape. Make corner fillets also with PMC mortar. Seal all rain water pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry with fiber glass cloth in between followed by one coat of Tapecrete Brushtopping. Also, extend each step of same treatment on parapet walls. After consulting with a civil engineer, provide 50mm average thick screed concrete admixed with CICO No. 1 with proper slope on horizontal surface or fix up tiles suitable for terrace area with cement sand mortar admixed with CICO No. 1. On parapet walls, provide 15mm protective cement-sand plaster admixed with CICO No. 1.

Solution for New Homes

In new constructions, for waterproofing of terrace, clean the surface and make corner fillets with PMC mortar. Seal all rain water pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry with fibre glass cloth in between followed by one coat of Tapecrete Brushtopping. Also, extend each step of same treatment on parapet walls. Provide 50mm average thick screed concrete admixed with CICO No. 1 with proper slope on horizontal surface or fix up tiles suitable for terrace area with cement sand mortar admixed with CICO No. 1.. On parapet walls, provide 15mm protective cement-sand plaster admixed with CICO No. 1.

Problem Prevention: Waterproofing treatment for concrete water tanks

The water tanks require robust waterproofing treatment from internal side as water having weight & pressure is stored in it.

Solution

In this case, first of all make the concrete dense & sound by injection grouting process all along the construction joints in the tank. Then, seal all water pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry with fibre glass cloth in between followed by one coat of Tapecrete Brushtopping on horizontal surface and all four walls of the tank. Provide 15-20mm protective cement-sand plaster admixed with CICO No. 1 above the treated surface. Please note that water tank should be made up of concrete only and it would be better if the concrete mix is admixed with CICO No. 1

Problem Prevention: Waterproofing treatment for terrace garden or garden area on basement slab

There is continuous moisture & water always present in soil in garden area. Thus, this area requires heavy duty waterproofing course.

Solution

First clean the surface and seal all drain water pipe & concrete joints with epoxy mortar CICO Poxy 2125. Apply two coats of Tapecrete slurry as primer coat & surface preparation. Then, apply two coats of Corchem 206 I (Liquid applied P.U. based elastomeric compound) on primed surface. When the second coat of Corchem 206 I starts drying, lay 100gsm geo-textile on it. Also, extend each step of same treatment on vertical walls, wherever possible, at least upto soil layer height. Provide 50mm average thick screed concrete admixed with CICO No. 1 with proper slope on horizontal surface. On vertical walls, provide 15-20mm protective cement-sand plaster admixed with CICO No. 1. Lay gravel layer or drainage board (as per manufacturer’s instructions) and establish filter media by laying 300gsm geo-textile. Lay soil as required.
