GENERAL

Construction chemicals are specialty chemicals that make construction projects not only safer, but also stronger and environmentally viable. Construction chemicals industry plays a role similar to a doctor by providing solutions to civil engineers to build healthy and long lasting structures which can last for years without any risk or fear. With the increase in demand for bigger, higher and stronger structures in various environmental conditions, ordinary concrete requires further modification to perform and deliver expected end strengths in various climatic and critical conditions. This is achieved through addition of chemicals to modify the behaviour of cement concrete.

Waterproofing coatings: These are polymer modified or polyurethane based liquid applied waterproofing membrane coatings, generally applied on positive side of various structures like basement, sunken, roof, etc. to waterproof these concrete structures and protect them from ingress of water inside the concrete.

Admixtures: Admixtures are water reducing agents and concrete plasticizer in liquid form, when mixed even in small quantity in concrete mix, changes the workability and other properties of the concrete mix. Admixtures also reduce cement ratio in concrete mix for maintaining same strength and helps in reducing the cost.

Concrete Aids: Consists of curing compounds used for curing of concrete in an eco-friendly manner and formwork release agent/ shuttering oil for easy release of formwork and to get fair faced concrete.

Grouts and Grouting Compounds: Mainly used for grouting base plates under foundations, anchoring of bolts or other areas requiring high compressive strength, and for grouting in concrete structures with fine to medium cracks, crevices, honey combed concrete for carrying structural consolidation. Cementitious, epoxy resin & polyester resin based grouts are available with CICO in pourable, injectable & capsule forms.

Floor Coatings: Epoxy resin based floor coatings used to make industrial floors where heavy machines are to be installed and hygiene is also to be maintained like food industry, paper and pulp industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc. It provides excellent mechanical strength, good chemical resistance, wearing resistance to the floor.

Flooring Compounds: Cementitious flooring compounds used to prepare long wearing abrasion resistant industrial floors, subjected to movement of steel wheels, heavy trucks, machineries, etc.

Epoxy Compound and Mortar: Epoxy based mortars used for achieving high mechanical/ tensile/ compressive strength, strong bonding, good abrasion resistance, fast and accurate fixing of bolts, machine beds, bridge beams, etc. and used in industrial floors, airport hangers, ports, etc.

Shotcrete Accelerators: These specialty chemicals are used for wet or dry process sprayed concrete & mortar in galleries and tunnels for retaining walls, embankment and tank linings, etc.

Bonding Material: These epoxy resin based material acts as bonding agent between old to old, old to new concrete, assembly of pre-stressed concrete segmental bridge construction, sealing of crack surface defects, etc.

Tile & structural adhesives: An adhesive used for bonding ceramic, mosaic tiles to concrete/ plastered surfaces, floors and walls.

Sealants: These are Polysulphide or Polyurethane based sealants used to form long lasting weather resistant and waterproof seals in expansion joints.

Membrane:Pre-formed membranes used for waterproofing treatment of various structures like roof, basement, landscape area, terrace gardens, etc.

Anticorrosives/ Protective coatings: CICO has wide range of protective coatings used for various purposes on concrete/ steel structure as corrosion inhibitor, excellent barrier to highly aggressive environment/ climatic conditions, water-repellent, thermal insulation, etc.

Repair & rehabilitation products: These range of products are specially developed for common repairs of old & heritage structures for their structural as a part of their regular maintenance to preserve them for centuries.

Carbonation is the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by a chemical reaction in the concrete, mainly exposed to an aggressive environment. When these reactions take place the pH value of concrete which is normally 13, starts dropping. Once the carbonation process reaches the reinforcement – and the pH-value drops beneath 9, corrosion of reinforcement starts. The formation of lime (CaCO3) during carbonation process also causes the structure to weaken over a period of time. Our anti-carbonation paint CICO Guard WS or CICO Guard S forms an impermeable coating and prevents the ingress of carbon dioxide or chloride ions into the substrate. Thus it protects the structure from the effects of carbonation and chloride ion diffusion which ensures longer life of the structure.

FOR HOME OWNERS

CICO offers different type of waterproofing products for roof waterproofing. The most suitable and time-tested products are CICO TAPECRETE P151 and CICO TAPECRETE RTU.

Increasing dampness is a common problem for houses and it primarily occurs due to failure of the damp proof course. In suchcases remove the plaster to expose the brick wall and apply 2 coats of CICO Tapecrete P151 slurry, keep it exposed for 7 days and do the re-plastering with CICO SUPER.

Do not use any water with CICO TAPECRETE P151.

No, you should mix CICO TAPECRETE P151. with OP cement @ 1:2 by weight and then apply the slurry by brush or roller.
Yes, CICO SUPER is a product which you should use with plaster mortar to get excellent results. At a nominal incremental cost, this will prove to be a cost effective measure in the long run.

FOR PROFESSIONALS

Corrosion inhibitors acts in two ways. First, they delayed the onset of corrosion, and second, they tend to reduce the rate of corrosion. They are either anodic, cathodic, or a combination of both. Some type of corrosion inhibitors work to create a protective barrier that stabilizes the layer of rust surrounding the steel; while others provide a thin protective coating that prevents chlorides from reacting with the steel, Yet others are inhibitors, which react with iron to form a protective film or coating that prevents chloride from reaching the steel; acts as an oxygen barrier and reduces corossion.
Plastic shrinkage occurs when fresh concrete loses its moisture during the interim period of pouring and before development of strength. This type of shrinkage is aggravated by environmental effects of ambient temperature, wind and relative humidity. The problem aggravates further during hot weather concreting

Shrinkage reducers control the drying shrinkage and minimize cracking. Terry Holland in his recent article in Concrete Construction, “Using shrinkage-reducing admixtures”, suggests asking manufacturers the following:

  • What are the effects on fresh concrete?
  • What are the effects on hardened concrete?
  • What is the effect on durability?
  • Is there any information on how have similar structures behaved in service?
  • Is the same cement going to be used as in the test specimens or comparison project?
  • What is the impact on cost?

Ensure there are enough concrete finishers on the job. Since the concrete sets early in hot weather condition, it will lead to ugly surface if not finished on time.

  • Plan an early morning or evening pour during hot weather. Concreting at night is advisable in such condition.
  • Schedule concrete trucks to avoid waiting time. This will keep the concrete from going into set mode too early.
  • Consider modifying the concrete mix to include chemical set retarders and water reducers if other actions are not enough.
  • Start curing the concrete as soon as finishing is complete. Windbreaks, sunshades or water misting will hold water longer to continue the hydrating process, which leads to stronger concrete.
  • Cut the slabs immediately after finishing the concrete to control where cracking might occur. All concrete will crack, it’s just a matter of where.

Based on ACI 306R-10, the minimum temperature necessary for maintaining concrete hydration and gaining strength is 5 °C. If temperature falls below 5 °C, some special measures should be taken to prevent decrease in the rate of hydration and to prevent freezing of fresh concrete. CICO ANTIFREEZE is a product specially designed for such cold weather conditions.

Chemical admixtures are used to improve the quality of concrete during mixing, transporting, placement and curing. They fall into the following categories:

ASTM C494 specifies the requirements for seven chemical admixture types. They are:

  • Type A: Water-reducing admixtures
  • Type B: Retarding admixtures
  • Type C: Accelerating admixtures
  • Type D: Water-reducing and retarding admixtures
  • Type E: Water-reducing and accelerating admixtures
  • Type F: Water-reducing, high range admixtures
  • Type G: Water-reducing, high range, and retarding admixtures
For such structure which are prone to cracking we should go for products having elongation of more than 300% . Polyurethane based product such as CORCHEM 206 I will be suitable.
CICO offers a range of wax based and resin based curing compounds for use in such condition.
Yes we have a wide range of repair compounds of different base and we also provide technical advice for such cases.
